If you’re reading this post, you’re in on the ground floor of a brand new place to share and discuss the ways God is at work in the state of Kentucky. As you can probably tell by the name, it’s been born out of the latest big discussion in Southern Baptist Convention life — the Great Commission Resurgence.
The Great Commission Resurgence refers to a call from Southern Baptist Convention President Johnny Hunt for the SBC to put a renewed focus and energy on fulfilling the Great Commission. The central ideas of GCR were outlined in a report he authored along with Dr. Danny Akin, the president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. You can read the GCR document at www.greatcommissionresurgence.com.
The document and the ensuing discussion resulted in a motion on the floor of the Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Louisville on Tuesday, June 23, calling for Dr. Hunt to appoint a task force to closely examine the work of all Southern Baptist Convention entities to study how Southern Baptists can work “more faithfully and effectively together in serving Christ through the Great Commission.” The motion called for the task force to study the issues and bring their report, along with any recommendations, to the 2010 SBC annual meeting, June 15-16 in Orlando, Fla.
“We are looking at an unprecedented set of opportunities before us, especially when it comes to reaching the world for the Lord Jesus Christ. We sense from our churches an incredible desire to be even more active in the task of getting the Gospel to the ends of the earth,” Southern Baptist Theological Seminary President Al Mohler said in making the motion. “It’s the task of this generation to be responsive both to the opportunities that are before us and to the conviction and commitment of our churches. We need to set that passion loose…”
The motion passed by a large majority and Hunt appointed the members of the task force later in the day. Those serving are: Ronnie Floyd of Springdale, Ark., chair; Jim Richards, executive director, Southern Baptists of Texas Convention; Frank Page, of Taylors, S.C.; David Dockery, president of Union University in Jackson, Tenn.; Simon Tsoi, IMB trustee from Arizona; Donna Gaines of Cordova, Tenn.; Al Gilbert, Winston-Salem, N.C.; J.D. Greear of Durham, N.C.; Tom Biles, director of missions, Tampa Bay Baptist Association; Danny Akin, president of Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary; Al Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; John Drummond, layman from Florida; Harry Lewis of the North American Mission Board; Mike Orr of Chipley, Fla.; Roger Spradlin of California; Bob White, Georgia Baptist Convention executive director; Ken Whitten of Tampa, Fla.; and Ted Traylor of Pensacola, Fla.
This blog is for the purpose of creating conversation space regarding the Great Commission Resurgence, Great Commission Task Force and the Great Commission itself as it applies to Kentucky Baptist life. We’ll examine how Kentucky Baptists are presently at work in seeking to effectively share the Gospel, explore ways to do things better and, in general, see what the Lord might show us all as we focus our attention on our mission.
Personally, I think it will be educational, interesting and fun but that will depend largely on the participation of readers like you. I encourage you to join the conversation and let everyone who reads this blog know what you think. All opinions are welcome and there’s no “company line” that anyone has to take. The only thing I ask is that everyone be respectful and Christlike as you share.
